Challenge

The Michif language, spoken by the Métis Nation, is critically endangered. Without urgent intervention, this unique and vital cultural language risks being lost. Our partners set out to create resources for the next generation, specifically for preschool-aged children, ensuring that young learners could begin engaging with Michif in fun, accessible, and culturally resonant ways.

The challenge was not only to create learning materials, but to design them in a way that was modern, engaging, and sustainable, both digitally and physically.

Our contributions included:

• Digital Flashcards – Built interactive cards with illustrations, animations, and both Michif and English words.
  
• Audio Pronunciations – Integrated recordings from Elder Norman Fleury, ensuring accurate and authentic language learning.
  
• Branding & Design – Developed project branding with Métis-inspired aesthetics to honor cultural identity.
  
• Interactive Web Platform – Created an intuitive website to host the flashcards and provide access to digital resources.
  
• E-Commerce Functionality – Enabled online sales for physical flashcard sets, supporting accessibility and sustainability.
